中文在涉及决策或判断时通常会提到两个器官：脑（head）和心（heart）。比如，尽管感情上如何如何，理智却告诉我如何如何。英语文化也有类似的二元区分，比如简·奥斯汀的小说Sense and Sensibility（《理智与情感》），美国在越南和伊拉克实施的hearts and minds campaign（让异族从理性和情感上真正接受美国的价值观）。但是，英语里还常常提到另一个器官，gut。除了跟着大脑走或跟着心灵走以外，还有跟着肠子走（follow your gut）。特朗普就有一句名言：Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut…（经验教给我几点，一个就是听肠子的话……）

Gut指消化道，更技术性的说法是intestine。但gut也用于描述一种说不清道不明但非常肯定的感觉，比如I had a feeling in my guts that this was going to be a bad night（我隐隐觉得这一夜情况不妙）；听肠子的话就是听从直觉。复数形式的guts也指果敢和勇气，相当于中文的“胆”。比如，She had the guts to decide what she wanted and go for it（她有胆量决定自己想要什么，然后奋力争取）。

从这些例子看，肠子并不像通常想象的那样只负责一些上不得台面、羞于启齿的低等工作，而和高贵的大脑、柔软的心灵一道参与日常的感知与决策。肠子同样也有精神层面的功能，甚至比头脑和心灵更高级——神秘，激情，不受控制。形容痛苦，中文有“撕心裂肺”，英语则是“肠子扭曲”（gut-wrenching）。形容紧张，中文说心头有小鹿乱撞，英文则是胃里有蝴蝶飞舞（butterflies in somebody's stomach），也就是感到恶心眩晕。事实上，科学界也越来越认为，有独立神经系统和1亿个神经元的肠子是人的“第二大脑”（second brain）。
